Tsonga Disco/Music

Tsonga Disco is a modern version of the traditional Tsonga music. Between 2008 and 2009, Tsonga Disco spanned a subgenre called Shaghaan Electro, a low-tech; lo-fi electronic dance music that combines MIDI keyboards with marimba beats, distorted vocal samples and lyrics with Tshestha Boys amongst others headling the act. Here are some of the originators of Tsonga Disco.

It was a challenge to stick to my traditions. There was a perception that Tsonga people are inferior and should always behave small. But I realised, and this was emphasised at home, that the best thing I could do was to be myself," Shirimani remembers.

General Muzka is Tsonga Disco artist Chris Mkhonto. The General is the leading light of the current wave of Tsonga (or Shangaan) Disco artists. Synths dominate as with all Tsonga Disco, but they are nicely supplemented by some very nifty guitar work. Chris Mkhonto has come a long way since the days when he sang for his school as a small boy in the remote village of Xanthia, near Bushbuckridge, Limpopo.
